Switch to paid version after free version limit has been reached. Dall.e
Dall.e, the image generator created by the company behind Chat GPT, has an interesting and easy approach.
The idea is to let the user experiment the product without mentioning at any moment that there are some kind of limitations.
Then, after having performed 5 or 6 researches, an banner is triggered, indicating that the user has 10 credits left and how to act on it:
either wait one month to have a new limited access to the tool
either buy credits now
The approach
The approach is very cool since, in any cases, the use start experimenting with the tool. S.he doesn’t have time to feel reluctant to use the product thinking “ho, I will have to pay soon, let’s try another free solution”. The product will have to convince with a good experience from an easy to use interface, a well-organised content and a convincing result.
The flow
Friction 1
The thing is that the user doesn’t know what 1 credit stands for. One, two, three researches left? If I have 10 credits left, what does that mean, and do I really have to buy more?
The user can do some research through the “Learn more about credits” but here there’re 2 problems:
the link is located on the next page,
honestly, when it comes to pay for something new that you can find for free, why a user would bother investigate? Oh yes, some of the will, and some of them will not even care about not knowing about that info, but as designers we should try not to distract users from keeping on using our product. And in this case, no credits = no product.
Friction 2
When I click on the banner to buy more credits, since I already created an account for ChatGPT and since I am logged in, Dall.e sends me directly to a personilised sceen where I need to … buy some credits.
It seems to me that a click could have been prevented between this page and the following pop up. I wonder if some technical requirements made that necessary?
Here the user can choose the amount of credits s.he wants to buy. The incrementation range is 15 USD = 115 credits.
Then I click on continue and land on the check out.
